There tends to be confusion on whether cyclists must use cycle lanes where available. There are many cycle lanes on our roads, especially in busier towns and cities. They are designed to be a safer way to use the roads for cyclists. However, this isn’t always the case.

Is it compulsory to cycle in a cycle lane?

Although many cyclists choose to use cycle lanes, it is not compulsory to cycle in them. If it is safer to not use the cycle lane, then use the road instead.

Sometimes you’ll see that cycle lanes are flooded or poorly maintained, which can lead to serious cycle accidents. Often, you’ll see that they are neglected, which is what causes them to be a hazard when cycling.

How to distinguish cycle lanes

Cycle lanes are painted on the road, often marked with a symbol of a bicycle to show their designated use. The surface of cycle lanes is often painted either green or red, but sometimes they don’t have a colour. It also doesn’t matter what the colour is, they are still designated cycle lanes.

Solid white line: Motorists cannot drive or park in the cycle lanes during times of operations. Just because motorists aren’t allowed in the cycle lane doesn’t mean cyclists must stay within the lane.

Dotted white line: Motorists are supposed to stay clear of the cycle lane, but it isn’t an offence if they do.

Cycle lanes on the pavement

Whilst cyclists aren’t allowed to ride on the pavement, sometimes there are cycle lanes which are on the pavement. Where there is a designated cycle lane, cyclists can use this.

The pavement may be split to allow for both a cycle lane and pedestrians. These are usually marked with a white line and show the symbol of a bicycle on one side, and a pedestrian on the other. There are also often signposts which show this as well as it being marked on the pavement.

With flow cycle lane & contraflow cycle lane

With flow cycle lane: Cyclists are cycling in the same direction as motorists. These tend to be the most common cycle lanes which you will see either on the road or on the pavement.

Contraflow cycle lane: Cyclists are cycling in the opposite direction as motorists. These are typically used in busy built-up areas as they are thought to be safer in these circumstances for cyclists.

Staying safe on the roads

As a cyclist you’ll need to make an informed decision about whether it is safe to use a cycle lane or not. If it is safer to use the road like other motorists, then it’s best to do this. By analysing the situation, you can help to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident.

If the cycle lane is covered in debris and it wouldn’t be safe to use it, you have the same right to use the road as any other user.
